Valley Mountain Bikers and Hikers

Trail Advocacy

Trail advocacy is about protecting and improving access to trails and outdoor recreation in the Mat-Su Valley. Valley Mountain Bikers and Hikers (VMBAH) works to support sustainable trail development, protect existing access, and represent the interests of hikers and mountain bikers in land-use discussions.

Our advocacy efforts focus on collaboration, education, and constructive engagement with land managers, partner organizations, and the broader community.

What Trail Advocacy Means

Trail advocacy includes:

  • Supporting thoughtful trail planning and design

  • Promoting sustainable and shared-use recreation

  • Participating in public planning and land-use processes

  • Encouraging responsible trail use and stewardship

  • Building partnerships with land managers and other user groups

Advocacy helps ensure trails remain accessible, safe, and sustainable for current and future users.

How VMBAH Advocates

VMBAH engages in advocacy by:

  • Working with local, state, and federal land managers

  • Collaborating with partner organizations and recreation groups

  • Providing community input on trail and recreation projects

  • Supporting policies and plans that benefit trail access

  • Sharing information with the community about trail-related issues

Our approach emphasizes cooperation, transparency, and long-term solutions.

Why Advocacy Matters

Decisions about land use, access, and development directly affect where and how people can recreate. Without community involvement, trail access and quality can be lost over time.

Effective advocacy helps:

  • Protect existing trails and access points

  • Improve trail quality and sustainability

  • Balance multiple recreation uses

  • Strengthen outdoor recreation opportunities across the Valley

VMBAH works to ensure the Mat-Su remains a place where people can hike, bike, and enjoy the outdoors.

Get Involved in Advocacy

Advocacy is strongest when it reflects the voices of the community. You can support advocacy efforts by:

  • Staying informed about trail and land-use issues

  • Participating in public meetings or comment periods

  • Supporting VMBAH through membership or donations

  • Volunteering your time or expertise

No prior advocacy experience is required — just an interest in protecting and improving trail access.

Working Together

Trail advocacy works best when communities, land managers, and recreation groups work together. VMBAH is committed to being a constructive, collaborative voice for trails and outdoor recreation in the Mat-Su Valley
