Ladies and gentlemen, it is our great pleasure to inform you that the Government Peak Singletrack at Government Peak Recreation Area (GPRA) is open! We have spent the last two summer constructing these trails and we are proud to finally be able to invite you to come out and ride the trails at GPRA. Our contractor, Ptarmagin Ptrails, finished the last bit of construction last week and Matanuska-Susitna Borough inspected it on Thursday, giving it two thumbs up and instructing VMBaH to open the trails immediately.
As of Thursday morning, they were opened to the public, and people began flocking there with their bikes by that afternoon. Configured in a stacked loop configuration, the Government Peak Singletrack offers beginner- and intermediate-level mountain bike trails and are designed in such a way as to allow new riders to progress in their skills the farther up the mountain they go. From the old school mountain bike trails of the south loop to the flow-y curves and jump lines of the northern loop, the Government Peak Singletrack offers something for everyone!
We are very grateful to all of our volunteers who have helped us at every turn to brush the trails, shape them, and keep them well maintained. We are thankful to SprocKidz youth mountain biking program and the Backcountry Bike and Ski crew for sending the time they donated to building and maintaining these trails. Thank you for giving so generously to this project! Thank you for helping us bring 4+ miles of brand new mountain bike trails to the Valley.
Thanks to our partners in this project: Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Mat-Su Trails & Parks Foundation, Happy Trails, Trailwerx, State of Alaska Recreational Trails Program, REI, and Alaska Trails. These organizations have helped us organize our efforts, designed the trails, donated funds, and helped promote this project within the community. Thank you for your support.
But, there's more...!
VMBaH is quite proud of the trails we constructed at GPRA, but we're not content. Not yet. We think we can do more. And, that's why we're already preparing for Phase 2 of the Government Peak Singletrack project. We have secured the funding necessary to build 2.3 miles of new singletrack at GPRA. This new trail will branch off of the trail system that we finished last week and will offer a short beginner loop, an intermediate loop, and an expert/technical line. We have all permitting and funding in place and are currently waiting for the final go-ahead from Matanuska -Susitna Borough. Our hope is to be able to start the layout and clearing for the new section of trail before the end of this summer, then commence construction as early in Spring 2016 as the weather will allow. Please follow us here and on our Facebook page for up-to-the-minute updates on Government Peak Singletrack Phase 2.
And, one last thing....
Even though construction of the Phase 1 trails at GPRA have come to an end, we still need some help maintaining the trails. We will be hosting some trail maintenance events in August and we would love it if you came out to help us keep our trails in great condition. On Tuesday, August 4 @ 6:00PM and on Saturday, August 8 @ 9:00AM we will be meeting to do some light trail work (weed whacking, root lopping, etc.). Please consider helping us for a couple of hours at one or both of these events, and then rewarding yourself with a nice long ride on the trails. For more information and last minute updates, please follow us on Facebook.
We hope to see you on the Government Peak Singletrack trails soon! In the meantime, check out some of these photos from the project.
